Welcome

Welcome to my ever-evolving blog. It started out as a blog on Beachbody workouts and products, mainly when I was a Beachbody coach. I no longer coach, not because I don't believe in Beachbody's programs (I subscribe to Beachbody on Demand and use their workouts every day), I am just not a salesperson and hated that aspect of it. I am more than willing to answer questions about my experiences with their products and the various workouts, and I feel freer to do so without the appearance of giving a biased review of something.

I have also started adding reviews for various things I have purchased like movies, books, CDs, and other products. This was brought about by a fight with Amazon in which all of my reviews were removed over a completely bullshit allegation that I posted a review that violated their terms of service. After going back and forth with the morons in the community-reviews department (even after they admitted that my posts did not violate their guidelines) they restored my account (which took them six months to do), but I have been posting my reviews on my blog to have them preserved in case something like that happens again. And here, I will post uncensored reviews so I will swear from time to time and post reviews that may be longer than Amazon's character limit. Everything I post here on any topic or product is my personal opinion, and I take no compensation for any product reviews I post. I am a member of Amazon's vine program and because I get those products for free, I keep those reviews on Amazon only, but everything I have purchased with my own money, whether from Amazon or some other store/website/outlet, I will post here.

I also plan to do some longer blog posts on various topics, such as how to learn physics, how to get through calculus, and longer reviews of workout programs as I do them. Basically, whatever strikes me as interesting at the time.  As you can see if you navigate around the blog, I had many years in between postings. During that time I was going back to school to get an engineering degree, and learning material that I avoided my first time through college was a different experience and one that gave me a lot of insight into how to do well in those classes, which I will try to impart here for those who are looking to get a science or engineering degree.

Blu-Ray/Movie Review: Heartbreakers

Heartbreakers is a 2001 romantic comedy starring Jennifer Love Hewitt, Sigourney Weaver, Gene Hackman, Ray Liotta, Jason Lee, and Anne Bancroft. Sarah Silverman and Zach Galifianakis also appear in supporting roles. It is about a mother-daughter pair of con women (played by Sigourney Weaver and Jennifer Love Hewitt) who con wealthy men in a marriage/cheating scam that leaves them with half his money. Ray Liotta plays the mark at the beginning of the movie, a wannabe mobster who runs a chop shop in New Jersey, and Gene Hackman plays the mark for the majority of the movie, the owner of a tobacco company in FL, who is the mark for "one last score" for Weaver and Love Hewitt's characters. The rest of the cast is rounded out by Jason Lee, who plays a love interest for JLH's character, along with minor roles for Carrie Fisher, Anne Bancroft, Sarah Silverman, and Zach Galifianakis.

The movie is meant to be a silly comedy with a bit of romantic comedy mixed. The story is very absurd, especially because Jason Lee's character would want to live happily ever after with Jennifer Love Hewitt's character just because she is hot, given how awful she is for most of the movie. But, it is not exactly meant to be anything but an unbelievable story. All the main actors involved were very good sports, as their characters were very over the top in a bad way. Gene Hackman as the chain-smoking, smoke-spewing, lung-hacking-up cigarette company executive was awesome, and they never missed an opportunity to put Jennifer Love Hewitt into a skin-tight, cleavage-baring outfit.

For those who get the Blu-Ray, it is a decent, but not great, video transfer. You will not get a big difference in quality from a DVD version, but you do the Blu-Ray anti-scratch coating, which is the only reason to upgrade. There are no subtitles, and the audio seems to dip in volume level, so I had to keep turning the volume on my TV up and down to hear some of the dialogue and then keep it from blasting during other scenes. There is about an hour's worth of extras, including a making-of documentary, a gag reel that also incorporates some making-of interviews, deleted scenes, and the trailer.

Overall, the movie is fun if you do not expect an award-winning movie. It is a silly comedy that does not try to be anything more than that. The Blu-Ray quality could be better, but it is not all that surprising that the movie, which came out well before the Blu-Rays were created, and was not popular enough to get a high-quality transfer. If you are looking for a comedy to kill a couple of hours watching, this is a good option.

DVD/Movie Review: She's the Man

She's the Man is a coming-of-age high-school-aged romantic comedy (albeit with 20-somethings playing teenagers) starring Amanda Bynes, Laura Ramsey, Channing Tatum, Vinnie Jones, and David Cross. Bynes plays Viola, a soccer player at a rival high school whose team is cut. When she is not allowed to try out for the boy's team, she hatches a plan to impersonate her twin brother, Sebastian, at his school in order to make their soccer team and beat her school's team. Of course, from there, hilarity ensues.

This was Bynes' last major role before she went off the deep end with a multitude of issues in her personal life. She really did a great job in the role, having really good comedic timing and pulling off the more emotional aspects of the movie. It is definitely not an award-winning movie, but it is a fun hour and a half for a romantic comedy set in high school, even an upscale private high school. David Cross has a pretty hilarious role as the high school principal, although it is hard not to see Tobias (his character from Arrested Development) in his performance.

The extras include deleted scenes, a gag reel, production stills, and a couple of behind-the-scenes featurettes. There is definitely a good amount of material included. Overall, the movie is fun but does not try to be more than what it is. If you do not expect an Academy Award winner, it is enjoyable.

Bly-Ray/Movie Review: Crazy Rich Asians

Crazy Rich Asians is a romantic comedy from 2018 adapted from a popular series of novels. The movie stars Constance Wu, Henry Golding, Gemma Chan, Lisa Lu, Michelle Yeoh, Awkwafina, and Ken Jeong. The last two are definitely the scene-stealers of the movie. The story itself is relatively simple. A teacher goes to Singapore with her boyfriend for a wedding in which he is the best man, only to find out that he comes from an obscenely rich family, and goes on to tell a fish out of water kind of story, with her trying to fit into that world. It has the distinction of being the first movie where the entire main cast is made up of Asians. It is a pretty basic love story about will the two main characters stay together or be split up because of his family. Michelle Yeoh is great as the disapproving mother whom Constance Wu's character is trying to impress first and then stand up to. The movie ranges from comedy to drama to love story. It is able to balance all those well and is very well written and acted.

The A/V quality of the Blu-Ray is great and it includes a handful of bonus features. The main extra is a commentary track on the film by the director and the author of the books. There is also a short making-of featurette, a gag reel, and some deleted scenes. Not a ton, but good for what is there. I don't know how closely the movie sticks to the first book. From what was said in the commentary, it was changed somewhat to put the focus on Rachel's story. So if you are a fan of the books and can accept that the movie may not follow the book exactly, you will probably find it enjoyable. If not, you will probably not. For those who have not read the books but just like romantic comedies that can mix a bit of drama in, then this is definitely worth checking out.

Blu-Ray/Movie Review: Killers

Killers is a 2010 movie starring Ashton Kutcher, Katherine Heigl, Martin Mull, Catherine O'Hara, and Tom Selleck. In the movie, Kutcher plays a professional assassin named Spencer Aimes. While in France, he meets Heigl's character, Jen, and the two have a whirlwind romance that causes Spencer to quit his job and settle down in suburban life. After three years, Spencer's life unravels when a bounty is put on his head when he refuses to take another assignment.

The A/V quality of the blu-ray is outstanding. While there are not a ton of CGI effects (if any), the location shots in Nice, France, look awesome in HD, especially if you have a large screen. As far as extras, there are some behind-the-scenes features, deleted and extended scenes, and a gag reel. In total, the extras run just under a half hour in length.

Ultimately, if you take this movie too seriously, you will probably hate it. If you take it as a spoof of romantic comedies and spy movies like Mr. & Mrs. Smith and the like and see it as a movie that is very much tongue-in-cheek, it is entertaining. The only real complaint I have about it is the pacing. There is a little back story and set up to Kutcher and Heigl's relationship, then the story fast forwards three years and kind of stalls as they try to transition Kutcher's character from spy life to mundane suburban life. Once the story starts to pick back up, as everyone around Spencer in the mundane suburban life starts trying to kill him, the pace gets better.

Yes, the premise and plot are totally preposterous. That is partly the point. If you can suspend your disbelief past that, however, I think you can find this enjoyable. Luckily, the movie is not so long that, unless you hate it from the get-go (and there are certainly people who do), it seems never-ending. Heigel and Kutcher are pretty much on the edge of who I would think of for lead roles in a movie, but since it was really not going for a serious blockbuster feel, they still worked as the leads. While it is certainly not the best movie ever, it is a decent combination of action movie and romantic comedy and worth the time to watch as long as you accept the movie for what it is.

Blu-Ray/Movie Review: Hitch

Hitch is a 2005 movie directed by Andy Tennant and starring Will Smith, Kevin James, Amber Valletta, and Eva Mendez. In the movie, Smith plays a "date doctor" named Alexander Hitchens, who coaches men on how to pick up women with the goal of dating them versus just hooking up. James plays Albert Brennaman, who works at an investment firm and hires Hitch to help him get one of the firm's celebrity clients (played by Valletta) on a date. In the meantime, Hitch starts to fall for Mendez's character, who is a workaholic gossip columnist.

The A/V quality of the blu-ray is okay, but not outstanding. Given, however, that the film is not a special-effects-laden blockbuster, most people will be fine with the quality of the transfer. The blu-ray has a handful of extras, including a gag reel, a couple of behind-the-scenes featurettes, and trailers for a few different movies. The movie is a fairly good, tongue-in-cheek romantic comedy. When the movie does not take itself too seriously and almost spoofs "typical" romantic comedies, it is very good. It is funny in a lot of parts, and the actors have (or seem to have) very good chemistry. Then, for some reason, it feels the need to become a "typical" romantic comedy and do almost the exact opposite of what it did for the first 3/4 of the movie. If they had stuck to its original formula, I think it would have been perfect.

Kevin James was the total scene-stealer in the movie. He was never afraid of making a fool of himself, and you could tell that he and Will Smith were having a lot of fun working off each other. Eva Mendes plays bitter and jaded very well and she showed she has very good comedic chops and can do more than just be eye candy. Ultimately, it is a good date night movie that can get kind of schlocky at the end. While that does keep the movie from being as good as it could have been, it does not take away from the entire thing. It is definitely worth the time to watch.

DVD/Movie Review: Doc Hollywood

Doc Hollywood is a 1991 romantic comedy starring Michael J. Fox, Julie Warner, Woody Harrelson, Bridget Fonda, and David Ogden Stiers. The movie is a classic fish-out-of-water story. A doctor named Ben Stone is driving across the country to take a job in Los Angeles and gets stuck working at the hospital in the small fictional town of Grady South Carolina after destroying the town judge's fence. It is completely absurd from a reality concept, but it is one of those stories that if you can suspend your disbelief on that part, you can enjoy the rest of it.

As far as the DVD itself goes, it is definitely nothing fancy, with no bonus material or extras, and it did not get the best DVD transfer. Hopefully, it will get a better release at some point in the future, maybe for a 35th Anniversary release as a Special Edition Blu-Ray. But, for the moment, it has just had the bare-bones DVD and Blu-Ray release.

Overall, the movie is great even though the story is predictable, and you can see where it is going from a mile away, Even so, the acting is great, and the story is told in a very entertaining way. Fox and Warner were great as the leads and David Ogden Stiers was awesome as Grady's mayor and stole nearly every scene he was in. But really, the entire cast, supporting actors included, did well and brought something to the story. Personally, I think that this movie, along with Secret of My Success, is Michael J. Fox's best movie outside the Back to the Future series. It is also among the last handful of movies in which Fox had a leading role as it was during the filming of this movie in which he was diagnosed with Parkinson's. It is absolutely worth the time to watch.

Blu-Ray/Movie Review: Love & Other Drugs

Love and Other Drugs is a romantic comedy about a pharmaceutical salesman played by Jake Gyllenhaal, who is on the verge of getting fired until Viagra comes along and reignites his career. One day while pushing Viagra at a clinic, he meets and falls for Anne Hathaway's character and they start in what is supposed to be an NSA relationship, mainly because she has Parkinson's and does not want to get into a long-term relationship. Of course, feelings develop and the two have to figure out what they want. It has a strong supporting cast including Judy Greer, Oliver Platt, Hank Azaria, and Josh Gad.

For those who get the blu-ray, the A/V quality is very good, and it has a handful of extras, including deleted scenes, character profiles of Maggie (Hathaway) and Jamie (Gyllenhaal), a feature on Jamie Reidy, the real salesman on whose book the movie is based, the theatrical trailer, and a BD live feature on Gyllenhaal's favorite scene.

Overall, the movie is good, but not without its flaws. The movie does at times seem like a schill for big Phrama, with Pfizer getting a ton of product placement, and just kind of glossing over many issues that the drug companies create (which could easily be more of a theme, because of the character of Maggie and her predicament). There is a lot of sex and nudity in the movie, moreso than in other rom-coms. While it does follow some of the traditional rom-com formulaic notes, it does diverge from that at times. While it is definitely not a family-friendly movie, it is worth watching if you are looking for an adult rom-com.
