Welcome

Welcome to my ever-evolving blog. It started out as a blog on Beachbody workouts and products, mainly when I was a Beachbody coach. I no longer coach, not because I don't believe in Beachbody's programs (I subscribe to Beachbody on Demand and use their workouts every day), I am just not a salesperson and hated that aspect of it. I am more than willing to answer questions about my experiences with their products and the various workouts, and I feel freer to do so without the appearance of giving a biased review of something.

I have also started adding reviews for various things I have purchased like movies, books, CDs, and other products. This was brought about by a fight with Amazon in which all of my reviews were removed over a completely bullshit allegation that I posted a review that violated their terms of service. After going back and forth with the morons in the community-reviews department (even after they admitted that my posts did not violate their guidelines) they restored my account (which took them six months to do), but I have been posting my reviews on my blog to have them preserved in case something like that happens again. And here, I will post uncensored reviews so I will swear from time to time and post reviews that may be longer than Amazon's character limit. Everything I post here on any topic or product is my personal opinion, and I take no compensation for any product reviews I post. I am a member of Amazon's vine program and because I get those products for free, I keep those reviews on Amazon only, but everything I have purchased with my own money, whether from Amazon or some other store/website/outlet, I will post here.

I also plan to do some longer blog posts on various topics, such as how to learn physics, how to get through calculus, and longer reviews of workout programs as I do them. Basically, whatever strikes me as interesting at the time.  As you can see if you navigate around the blog, I had many years in between postings. During that time I was going back to school to get an engineering degree, and learning material that I avoided my first time through college was a different experience and one that gave me a lot of insight into how to do well in those classes, which I will try to impart here for those who are looking to get a science or engineering degree.

Product Review: Amazon Basics Original Fresh Liquid Hand Soap

I bought these back when hand soap was hard to find in the early days of the COVID-19 pandemic. This gets you a lot of soap for a good price. The drawback to it is that it definitely has a bulk "industrial" feel and scent. It is not moisturizing at all and does not smell anywhere near as good as some of the scented hand soaps. But, you get about three times the amount as in a lot of those pump soaps, and you can get it as a subscribe and save item on Amazon.

Product Review: Dial Liquid Hand Soap, Himalayan Pink Salt & Water Lily

I ordered this as a replacement for a subscribe and save item I had set up on Amazon. Usually, the soap I order through that comes inside a ziplock bag, and the top is screwed on well. This one was just plopped in a box with another item, and the top was loose (it did not come off all the way) causing some of the soap to leak out. Definitely not packaged as well as usual. The packaging issue aside, it does smell very good and is akin to the other non-foaming dial soaps.

Product Review: Dial Complete Foaming Antibacterial Hand Wash, Soothing White Tea

This is an antibacterial soap that smells nice, does not leave your hands dried out, and will last anywhere from a couple of weeks to a month, depending on how many people are using it, and how often. I used it in my master bathroom, and it was just me using it, and it lasted the better part of a month (3+ weeks). If you can get your hands on some, it is worth the pickup.

Product Review: Treehouse by Natureclean Nature Clean Liquid Hand Soap

It is a good size and is available as a subscribe and save item on Amazon, which is nice (when it is available). The only complaint I have is that it has a very strong, almost overpowering, citrus smell. It does not linger on your hands after you rinse them off, so it is not a huge drawback, but it could be toned down a lot.

Product Review: AMMEX Clear Vinyl Medical Gloves

I originally got these for my mom to protect her hands when she was going through chemo. One of the side effects of her infusions was that her fingernails would split away from the nail bed and get infected. So, she would wear these when she was doing something that required her hands to be protected.

I also use them when cleaning the bathroom or when I take the dog out so I do not risk touching dog poop with my bare hands when tieing off the poop bags. They are available as a subscribe-and-save item on Amazon so you can automatically reorder at whatever intervals work for you.

Product Review: Jergens Natural Glow 3-Day Self Tanner for Medium to Deep Skin Tone

This is a tanning lotion by Jegens. It does not have an overpowering scent, and provides a gradual darkening, without giving a "fake bake"/orange look. It dries pretty quickly so you are not left feeling slimy after you put it on, and it is pretty good at moisturizing. It is not a huge bottle, just 10 fl Oz, so you may go through it pretty quickly depending on how much you use.

Product Review: ACT Restoring Mouthwash

It is a smaller bottle of ACT restoring mouthwash. It is good for traveling or taking to an office to use after lunch. It is not overpowering, nor does it burn like some mouthwashes do, because it does not have any alcohol. It is nice to have available as a subscribe and save item on Amazon, because, at least for me, it is easy to run out of because I am not always thinking about picking it up when I go to the store.

Product Review: OneBlade Refills

This is a three-pack of refill blades for the Norelco OneBlade. I have very sensitive skin and have tried nearly every razor and blade type imaginable (at least it seems that way) trying to find one that works without giving me ingrown hairs and razor burn. Of everything I have tried, these are by far the best. I love that you can use them wet with shaving cream, or dry. While I still get some razor bumps after shaving, I get far less with these blades than with others I have used. You need the OneBlade unit to use these, so keep that in mind. But I definitely recommend these.

Product Review: Philips Norelco OneBlade, Hybrid Electric Trimmer and Shaver

I am one of those people who detest shaving because I get razor burn and ingrown hairs. I absolutely cannot use electric razors that cannot be used with shaving cream, and I have yet to find "regular" blades that don't irritate me. I can say the day after my first shave with this, it is much better (so far) than using a traditional blade.

I used shaving cream and this, and it gave a very good, smoother than I expected, shave. No razor burn at all, and so far, and I get far fewer ingrown hairs when using this than I do with regular razors. I definitely recommend it, especially those with sensitive skin.

Product Review: Water Flosser Cordless QQcute Oral Irrigator

This is definitely the most inexpensive water flosser I have seen. It does take some getting used to, and you really have to go by feel since you have to bend over the sink to keep water from going everywhere as you use it. For those of us who have very tightly spaced teeth which makes string flossing difficult to nearly impossible, it is a great alternative.

+++Update+++

A couple observations after using it for a while, the high setting (which it goes to when you immediately turn it on) takes some getting used to. I used it on the middle setting (which is a pulse) for the first few days, then started using the high setting, and now I can use the high setting the entire time.

To keep water from getting all over the place (it is a water flosser so the sink area will get a bit wet no matter what) I turn it on and use it until my mouth is full, then turn it off, spit the water out, and start again. That works much better than just having your mouth open and leaning over the sink as the instructions recommend.

Finally, you do not need to charge it a full 24 hours before using it the first time (again as the instructions say). Mine was fully charged in about 3 hours, and I have used it 3 times a day every day since April 8th and did not have to recharge it until April 22nd.

Product Review: Fitbit Alta

This is an older model Fitbit and did not have all the bells and whistles of the higher-end models (especially the newer models), but it does the step and sleep tracking. You can also track food through the Fitbit app, or pair it with an app like My Fitness Pal to log your meals (which is what I do). It can also detect when you are doing a workout on an elliptical or something comparable. It has notifications you can set for inactivity alerts or when you reach your daily step goal.

The display is turned off normally to save battery power, but you can turn it on by either tapping the fact of it twice or just turning your wrist. My only complaints are that the display turns off after a couple seconds, and the fasteners on the strap are a pain to close. It would be nice if they gave it a little longer on time for the display and a normal watch-like band. And, it does not use a regular USB-C charger. It has a charger with a clamp-like end that clips on to the back of the device. Of course, if you lose the charger you have to get a new one and you will have a non-functional device until you do. Overall, however, I am very satisfied with it.

Supplement Review: 1 Body Thyroid Support Supplement

This is a supplement that has minerals that help support a healthy Thyroid (such as copper and iodine) as well as helping to maintain a healthy immune system (such as zinc). It also contains a lot of Vitamin B12 and things like Ashwagandha powder. It is not a magic pill that will make you lose a ton of weight overnight or keep you from ever getting a cold. It is a supplement that is meant to be incorporated into an overall healthy lifestyle. Personally, I feel like I have been sleeping a little better since using this (most nights anyway). I think it has especially helped me with staying asleep once I get to sleep and reduced the amount of tossing and turning I do in my sleep.

Each bottle has 60 capsules (a 30-day supply) and directs you to take one in the morning and one in the evening, preferably with meals. They are easy to swallow and do not have an aftertaste (at least not one that I have ever noticed).

Product Review: Cleanze Antibacterial Hand Sanitizing Individual Hand Wipe Packets, 50 Unscented Disinfecting Hand Sanitizer

These are a bit easier on your hands than hand sanitizer (or the kind of wipes you sometimes get at restaurants when you order something particularly messy) and are a convenient way to "wash" your hands if you are not in a place with easy access to soap and water. They are also thicker and have a much better scent  (even though they are "unscented" they do have a slight smell to them, but it is not overpowering) than some other antibacterial wipes. Each package has fifty individually packed wipes that are perfect for keeping in the center console or glove compartment in your car, or to take along when you travel.

Supplement Review: N1N Premium Organic Superfood Greens Natural Fruit and Veggie Supplement

This is a supplement that contains extracts from various types of fruits and vegetables (e.g., blueberries, carrots, red bell peppers, raspberries, garlic, and the like), as well as green (e.g., kale, spinach, and various grasses). The blends are proprietary so it does not tell you how much of each you are getting, nor does it give a specific breakdown of vitamins and minerals. But, assuming their labeling is legit, you are getting some of the nutrients that would be very hard to get through just a whole-food diet, especially if you are not a big fan of eating the actual foods (minus the fiber eating the actual foods would give you).

There are 60 tablets in each bottle, with a serving size being two tablets, so the entire bottle has 30 servings. The directions are to take two tablets 1 to 3 times daily, preferably with meals. The tablets are reasonably sized and easy to swallow. And, they do not have any noticeable aftertaste. This is definitely more reasonably priced than other similar supplements and you can set it up as a subscribe and save item on Amazon to have it sent to you monthly.

Product Review: Amazon Basic Care Naproxen Sodium Tablets, 200 Count

This is Amazon's equivalent to Alleve. They are the same size and shape as the name-brand and other store-brand generics, but you get a lot more of them in the package and for a much better price than you would find them in stores.

Product Review: Preparation H Soothing Relief Flushable Cleansing Cooling Wipes

This is a three-pack of Preparation H wipes that relieve itching hemorrhoids but are not medicated, so they will not do much if you have inflamed or bleeding hemorrhoids.  In that case, you would still have to use a medicated ointment, but I think using these regularly can help prevent hemorrhoids from becoming inflamed. Of course, they are not really flushable, despite the claims. The only thing that should ever be flushed is toilet paper so I always just throw these in the garbage.

Supplement Reviw: Amazon Basic Care Vitamin C Supplement Drops

These are equivalent to the name-brand Vitamin C drops that you can find in most stores. They taste the same and have the same amount of Vitamin C per drop as the name brand (and with these, you get an assortment of flavors instead of just one flavor), but you get a lot more of them for a lot better price than you would pay in the stores. In the store, you would get far fewer per package and pay about the same price as you can get this one for. They are not cough drops but do provide some soothing relief when you have a sore throat. They do have some sugar, but not a crazy amount. But, you would probably not want to take a ton of them in a day, especially if you are eating low-carb or carb-cycling.

Supplement Review: fitcode Flexcode Ultra Premium Joint Support, Glucosamine, Turmeric, MSM, Chondroitin, Hyaluronic Acid

This is a supplement that provides joint support with the main ingredients being Glucosamine, MSM, Chondroitin, and Hyaluronic Acid. Each bottle gives you a 30-day supply (60 capsules) and directs you to take two capsules per day, preferably with food. The capsules are easy to swallow and do not have much of an aftertaste, especially if you swallow them with something that is flavored.

It is always hard to tell how much any supplement is doing for you, but I have had a bad knee for most of my life and one of my shoulders has started to have issues with mobility as I have gotten older, and I do think that both of them feel better as I have started taking this.  So, if you have issues with any of your joints I would recommend trying this to see if it helps you.

Supplement Review: Lions Mane Mushroom Supplement Gummies - Organic Mushroom Gummies - Reishi, Cordyceps, Turkey tail, Maitake, Shitake, Chaga

This mushroom supplement blends different types of mushrooms (like Turkey Tail, Shitake, and Chaga) into a good-tasting gummy. A serving size is two gummies, with about 30 servings per container. These have some sugar, so they taste better than some other mushroom gummy supplements but are not as friendly for those who are doing a low-carb or keto diet. So, if you are someone like me, who wants to get some of the health benefits of mushrooms, but hates the texture of eating the real thing, this is a good option for you (even though it is probably not as healthy as eating the actual mushrooms).

Supplement Review: PreserVision Areds 2 Chewables

This is an eye-health supplement that you take twice daily. It contains a combination of vitamins and minerals (Vitamin C, Vitamin E, Copper, and Zinc) as well as Lutein (the stuff in carrots) and Zeaxanthin, which is a pigment in the macula and retina of the eye. The tablets are pretty big, but they are chewable. They have a berry flavor that is not what I would call great, but not horrible either.

While it is always hard to tell how much a supplement such as this does or does not help your eyes, I have been taking eye supplements (Ocuvite before this) for years, and while my eyes have undergone the normal aging changes, they are still very healthy every year when I get them checked. So, I will continue to take these as long as that remains the case.
