Welcome

Welcome to my ever-evolving blog. It started out as a blog on Beachbody workouts and products, mainly when I was a Beachbody coach. I no longer coach, not because I don't believe in Beachbody's programs (I subscribe to Beachbody on Demand and use their workouts every day), I am just not a salesperson and hated that aspect of it. I am more than willing to answer questions about my experiences with their products and the various workouts, and I feel freer to do so without the appearance of giving a biased review of something.

I have also started adding reviews for various things I have purchased like movies, books, CDs, and other products. This was brought about by a fight with Amazon in which all of my reviews were removed over a completely bullshit allegation that I posted a review that violated their terms of service. After going back and forth with the morons in the community-reviews department (even after they admitted that my posts did not violate their guidelines) they restored my account (which took them six months to do), but I have been posting my reviews on my blog to have them preserved in case something like that happens again. And here, I will post uncensored reviews so I will swear from time to time and post reviews that may be longer than Amazon's character limit. Everything I post here on any topic or product is my personal opinion, and I take no compensation for any product reviews I post. I am a member of Amazon's vine program and because I get those products for free, I keep those reviews on Amazon only, but everything I have purchased with my own money, whether from Amazon or some other store/website/outlet, I will post here.

I also plan to do some longer blog posts on various topics, such as how to learn physics, how to get through calculus, and longer reviews of workout programs as I do them. Basically, whatever strikes me as interesting at the time.  As you can see if you navigate around the blog, I had many years in between postings. During that time I was going back to school to get an engineering degree, and learning material that I avoided my first time through college was a different experience and one that gave me a lot of insight into how to do well in those classes, which I will try to impart here for those who are looking to get a science or engineering degree.

4k-UHD/Movie Review: The Fifth Element

The Fifth Element is the 1997 science-fiction action film written and directed by Luc Besson. It stars Bruce Willis, Gary Oldman, and Milla Jovovich in the leading roles. The supporting cast includes Ian Holm, Chris Tucker, Luke Perry, Brion James, Tom Lister Jr., and Lee Evans.
The story opens in Egypt in 1914, but the bulk of the movie is set 300 years later, in 2214. The plot follows a futuristic New York City cab driver and former special forces major, Korben Dallas (played by Willis), who accidentally becomes responsible for the fate of the world when a mysterious woman named Leeloo (played by Jovovich) falls into his flying taxi. Leeloo turns out to be the physical embodiment of the supreme being, known as the fifth element, who is destined to combine with four elemental stones to defeat a great cosmic evil that threatens to destroy the universe every 5,000 years. Dallas must protect Leeloo from the evil corporate tyrant Jean-Baptiste Emanuel Zorg (played by Oldman) and a band of mercenary aliens, leading to a massive showdown at a luxury resort in space.
The 4K set is a two-disc set containing a UHD disc and a standard Blu-Ray. This release is a collectible Steelbook edition, though a standard 4K non-Steelbook edition is also available. The A/V quality of the UHD disc is very good. I would not say the transfer is as high-quality as some older films have received, but it still looks and sounds quite good, especially if you have a large screen and a decent sound system. The only extra feature included on the UHD disc itself is a short introduction and interview with director Luc Besson discussing the film. The rest of the extras are on the standard Blu-Ray disc and carry over from the original physical media release. There is a ton of behind-the-scenes and making-of material included, which provides a lot of interesting information about the production. One of the most interesting facts revealed is that the movie would not be picked up by a studio until after the massive success of Besson's prior movie, Léon: The Professional. The standard blu-ray also lets you play the movie with a "fact track" that uses captions to insert facts about the actors, the production, particular scenes, etc., throughout the film.
The movie itself remains a great blend of sci-fi action, humor, drama, and romance. Bruce Willis filmed this movie at the peak of his fame, and he did a great job in the leading role as the sarcastic, down-on-his-luck, but capable hero. This was actually the fifth film in the careers of both Chris Tucker and Milla Jovovich, and both of them were great in their respective roles. Tucker steals nearly every single scene he is in as the very flamboyant radio host Ruby Rhod, a character he modeled as a combination of Michael Jackson and Prince. The film was made just before digital effects took off in Hollywood, so it relies on a unique mix of practical model effects and early digital effects that give it a distinct visual charm. The film is rated PG-13, but it definitely skirts the line with some heavy sexual innuendo and brief nudity. Ultimately, it is a great film that was underrated when it was first released and is worth watching. If you are someone who collects physical media, this release is well worth adding to your collection.
