Welcome

Welcome to my ever-evolving blog. It started out as a blog on Beachbody workouts and products, mainly when I was a Beachbody coach. I no longer coach, not because I don't believe in Beachbody's programs (I subscribe to Beachbody on Demand and use their workouts every day), I am just not a salesperson and hated that aspect of it. I am more than willing to answer questions about my experiences with their products and the various workouts, and I feel freer to do so without the appearance of giving a biased review of something.

I have also started adding reviews for various things I have purchased like movies, books, CDs, and other products. This was brought about by a fight with Amazon in which all of my reviews were removed over a completely bullshit allegation that I posted a review that violated their terms of service. After going back and forth with the morons in the community-reviews department (even after they admitted that my posts did not violate their guidelines) they restored my account (which took them six months to do), but I have been posting my reviews on my blog to have them preserved in case something like that happens again. And here, I will post uncensored reviews so I will swear from time to time and post reviews that may be longer than Amazon's character limit. Everything I post here on any topic or product is my personal opinion, and I take no compensation for any product reviews I post. I am a member of Amazon's vine program and because I get those products for free, I keep those reviews on Amazon only, but everything I have purchased with my own money, whether from Amazon or some other store/website/outlet, I will post here.

I also plan to do some longer blog posts on various topics, such as how to learn physics, how to get through calculus, and longer reviews of workout programs as I do them. Basically, whatever strikes me as interesting at the time.  As you can see if you navigate around the blog, I had many years in between postings. During that time I was going back to school to get an engineering degree, and learning material that I avoided my first time through college was a different experience and one that gave me a lot of insight into how to do well in those classes, which I will try to impart here for those who are looking to get a science or engineering degree.

Blu-Ray/Movie Review: Fighting with my Family

Fighting With My Family is a 2019 biographical drama/comedy written and directed by Stephen Merchant starring Florence Pugh, Lena Headey, Nick Frost, Jack Lowden, and Vince Vaughn. It is a semi-biographical movie about the WWE career of professional wrestler Paige (Saraya Bevis), played by Pugh. It is based upon a documentary by the same name about Paige and her family of professional wrestlers in England that Dwayne Johnson (The Rock), who was a producer of the movie, along with making a few cameos, saw and convinced director Stephen Merchant to take it on as a project. Paige is played wonderfully in the movie by Florence Pugh. Lena Headey plays Paige's mother, and Nick Frost plays Paige's father (and steals every scene he is in).  Jack Lowden plays Paige's brother, who is also a wrestler trying to make it in the WWE, and Vince Vaughn plays a WWE trainer.

The basic story is that Paige and her brother, who wrestle in their family's small promotion in Norwich, England, are trying to get a tryout with the WWE. They get a tryout, and she is picked to go to WWE's developmental unit in the United States, and he does not. So it becomes a fish out of water story as she tries to make her break while her brother deals with being left behind at home. It mostly skips her rise to popularity in NXT, just showing her training and getting adjusted to life as a pro wrestler for the WWE, then ends with a very fictionalized version of her first match on the main roster. For a film about pro wrestling, it is very well done. It is an excellent combination of funny and heartfelt and takes a story about a profession that is over-the-top in absurdity at times very seriously.

The A/V quality of the Blu-Ray is very good, especially for a movie that does not make use of CGI or special effects. The extras consist of about 8 minutes of deleted and extended scenes, an 8-minute (give or take) making-of featurette, a gag reel, and a feature commentary track with the director. There are also two versions of the movie, the theatrical version as well as a director's cut. There was not much bonus material, but what was included was good. It would have been nice if Paige and Florence Pugh had been included on the commentary track instead of just the director.

Overall, it is a good movie. It is enjoyable even if you are not a huge fan of professional wrestling, but I think the people who enjoy it the most will be pro-wrestling fans. For those who are more old-school WWE/WWF fans, some clips from "back in the day" get sprinkled throughout the movie, and some cameos with some of the main roster WWE stars aside from The Rock. It is definitely worth checking out.

4k-UHD/Movie Review: Fast & Furious Presents: Hobbs & Shaw

Hobbs and Shaw is an action/adventure film from 2019 starring Dwayne Johnson, Jason Statham, Idris Elba, Vanessa Kirby, and Elza Gonzalez. It also features appearances by Roman Reigns, Helen Mirren, Ryan Reynolds, and Kevin Hart. It is an ancillary story that may or may not be tied in with the larger Fast & Furious franchise. The basic story is that Hobbs and Shaw are recruited by the CIA to team up to recover a virus that an organization with a mysterious "Director" who has some kind of past with Shaw is trying to unleash. It also brings Shaw's sister (played by Vanessa Kirby) into the mix, and she does a great job playing off the chemistry between Statham and Johnson. The main point of the movie is the three of them have to team up, all while Hobbs and Shaw try to one-up each other (as seen in the trailer) and stop Idris Elba's character, who is basically an enforcer for "The Director."

The tone and feel of the movie are a bit like the Fast & Furious movies, with over-the-top stunts, fights, and chase sequences. The acting is better than what has been in the other movies, but it is never going to win an Oscar. The cinematography is wonderful, especially at the end when they are in Samoa. And, there are a couple of hilarious cameos by Ryan Reynolds and Kevin Hart.

The 4K set is a two-disc set with a UHD disc and a regular Blu-Ray disc. The movie looks and sounds great in the UHD format. There is well over an hour's worth of bonus material, including an alternate opening and deleted scenes. And, the bonus material is included on the UHD disc, not just on the regular blu ray that is also included in the set.

Overall, this is a movie that you know what you will get. It is action-heavy, with a blend of humor and a bit of drama. It, like the other F&F movies, is a bit tongue-in-cheek and does not take itself too seriously, aside from the family vibe that the other movies have. If you like the other movies, while I cannot guarantee you will like this one given that none of the other characters show up or are even hinted at in this one, chances are good you will find this one enjoyable even if you do not love it. It is definitely worth a couple hours if you are in the mood for an action movie.

4k-UHD/Movie Review: Jumanji: The Next Level

Jumanji: The Next Level is a 2019 action/comedy starring Dwayne Johnson, Kevin Hart, Karen Gillan, Jack Black, Nick Jonas, Madison Iseman, Alex Wolff, Morgan Turner, and Ser'Darius Blain from the original movie. Awkwafina, Danny DeVito, Rory McCann, and Danny Glover join the cast for this movie. It is a direct sequel to Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle, which was partly a sequel and partly a reboot of the 1995 Robin Williams movie Jumani. It begins after a time jump when Spencer is in college in NY in a long-distance relationship with Martha, but feeling depressed and cut off from the group of friends. He returns home for Christmas break to find that his grandfather Eddie, played by Danny DeVito is staying in his room while recovering from hip surgery. It is not giving away anything to say he ends up in the game and the rest of the group goes back in to get him out, with unexpected consequences. One of which (again not giving anything away) is that Eddie and his frienemy Milo (played by Danny Glover) also end up in the game.

All of the main cast of characters who appear in the game, Dwayne Johnson, Jack Black, Kevin Hart, Karen Gillan, and Nick Jonas all appear. But, this time The Rock and Kevin Hart have to play DeVito and Glover's characters (to hilarious results) and Jack Black has to play Fridge. There are also new characters in the game, including Rory McCann (The Hound from Game Of Thrones, and one of the few outside pro wrestling who can make The Rock look small) playing the big-bad, Jurgen The Brutal, and Awkwafina. Colin Hanks also reprises his role, in a larger role than he had in the first movie (but not much).

The 4K set is a two-disc set containing a UHD disc (with the movie) and a regular Blu-Ray disc (with the movie and the bonus content). The film looks and sounds excellent in the UHD format. The UHD disc includes previews that play after the disc loads and the movie itself. The extras on the regular blu-ray disc include approximately an hour's worth of making-of and behind-the-scenes material, a gag reel, and the same previews as on the UHD disc. A good amount of extras, especially since fewer extras are being included on the physical disc releases these days.

Overall, the movie uses the same formula as the first, a blend of comedy, action, and a bit of drama. Yes, there is quite a bit of bad language and some off-color jokes. So, if you would be driven nuts by that, this is not for you. From what I remember, the first movie was not exactly squeaky clean either, but this is definitely not a movie for young kids like the original 1995 movie. The Rock and Kevin Hart are awesome playing old geezers, and once Awkwafina shows up, she steals every scene she is in. A mid-credits scene clearly sets up a third movie, that will definitely take things in a different direction. While I cannot say that everyone will like the movie, but if you were a fan of the 2017 movie, this is definitely worth checking out.

4k-UHD/Movie Review: Skyscraper

Skyscraper is a 2019 action movie that stars Dwayne 'The Rock' Johnson, Neve Campbell, Mckenna Roberts, Pablo Schreiber, Chin Han, Hannah Quinlivan, and Noah Cottrell.  Johnson stars as Will Sawyer, an ex-FBI hostage negotiator and amputee (thanks to the movie's opening scene) who has become a private security contractor. He is on assignment with his wife Sarah, played by Neve Campbell, and their two children in China to assess security for a new building owned by Zhao Ji (played by Chin Han, whom I will always refer to as "the television" because of the line in The Dark Knight). A group of terrorists starts a fire in the building, which boasts as the tallest skyscraper in the world, and manages to frame Will for it. The rest of the story involves Will trying to get his family out of the building and take down the terrorists.

The movie is a pretty standard action film and is derivative of movies like Die Hard and The Towering Inferno without being outright copies of either. If you have seen any of The Rock's action movies over the years, it definitely falls on the end of the ones where he is nearly indestructible and can overcome any obstacle. It is not as tongue in cheek as his role as Hobbs in the Fast and Furious movies, but almost. So, there is definitely a lot of suspension of disbelief that is required to get through it, so if you cannot do so or are hypercritical of unrealistic action movies, this is not for you.

The 4k set is a two-disc set containing a UHD disc and a regular Blu-Ray disc. The film looks and sounds great in the UHD format. The bonus material (which is included on the UHD disc, so you do not have to switch over to the regular blu-ray) includes deleted and extended scenes, a commentary track on the movie with the director, and a few short behind-the-scenes features. Good for what was included, but not hours worth of material. Excluding the commentary track, the extras probably clock in at around 45 minutes or so. Overall, it is a good movie, but not exactly a unique story. It is a bit predictable, but I think fun nonetheless. If you accept it for what it is, and what it is not, I think you can enjoy it. You do not have to watch every second of it to get what is going on and at just over an hour and a half, it flows well and does not feel too long.

4k-UHD/Movie Review: Rampage

Rampage is a 2018 film that is a blend of action-adventure and monster movies. It stars Dwayne Johnson, Naomie Harris, Malin Akerman, Jeffrey Dean Morgan, Jake Lacy, and Joe Manganiello. The film is based on a 1980s arcade game, where you played as creatures destroying the city. The movie is like a combination of Jurrasic Park and Godzilla, with a bit of Independence Day, the rebooted Planet of the Apes, and every film about a company run by evil people mixed together. And any movie in which The Rock is an indestructible hero.

The basic plot is that a company run by Malin Akerman's character is doing genetic experiments on rats in space, to make them essentially invulnerable to anything. The space station blows up, but canisters with the serum being used on the rats end up crashing to Earth and infecting a wolf, alligator, and gorilla. The Gorilla, George, is in a habitat run by Dwayne Johnson's character, who is a primatologist (and because he is 6'5" and 300lbs of muscle, ex-military) who works with George. Naomie Harris plays a scientist who worked for the company on the serum, and Jeffrey Dean Morgan is an FBI agent responding to the Rampaging animals.

The movie is a good blend of action, comedy, and a bit of drama. Of course, it makes The Rock an indestructible hero who can survive getting shot, being in crashing planes and helicopters, and falling buildings, and not only walk away but keep fighting. So, in that way, the movie is clearly tongue-in-cheek. The Rock also continues to show that he is a decent comedic actor and an excellent action star. And he can be self-deprecating and does not seem to take himself too seriously.

The 4k set is a two-disc set containing a UHD disc and a regular Blu-Ray disc. The film looks and sounds great in UHD, especially with a large screen. All the extras are included on the second, regular, Blu-Ray disc. Those include several behind-the-scenes and making-of featurettes (averaging about 10 minutes long), as well as a short gag reel. There is around an hour, give or take, of extras. Overall, it is an enjoyable action movie if you can suspend your disbelief and not take it extremely seriously. If you are a fan of The Rock's films, especially the newer ones like San Andreas or Hobbs and Shaw, then you will very likely enjoy this. If you are not a big fan of action movies as a whole, especially ones with lots of explosions and monsters, then this is not going to do anything for you.

Blu-Ray/Movie Review: The Scorpion King

The Scorpion King is a 2002 action/adventure movie starring The Rock, Kelly Hu, Steven Brand, Bernard Hill, Peter Facinelli, and Michael Clarke Duncan. This was one of The Rock's early roles, in which he was a headliner (along with The Rundown). At this point, he had appeared as The Scorpion King in The Mummy Returns, but that amounted to basically a cameo role in live-action and then a very cheesy CGI monster role toward the end of the movie, so he was really not in it much. This, of course, is a prequel spin-off, telling the early story of how he became the king.

The movie is enjoyable as a part action, part comedy, with some drama thrown in there. It is not a great script, and The Rock is clearly still feeling out his acting chops here. It is, at its core, an action movie meant to capitalize on The Rock's athletic background. But it also shows that he had the ability to grow into a rather well-rounded actor that he has become, and while I doubt he will ever be winning an academy award for any role he will ever do, he has far eclipsed even Arnold when it comes to acting ability for an action star. The movie is supported by a number of good B-level character actors, including Michael Clark Duncan, Peter Facinelli, Grant Heslov, and Bernard Hill (in Leonardo DaVinci-like role). Steven Brand, an English stage actor plays Memnon the main antagonist of the movie, and Kelly Hu plays Cassandra a sorceress with the gift of foresight. While her role was key to the story, much of what she was there for was to look pretty and stand around in skimpy outfits.

The A/V quality of the Blu-Ray is good, especially given that the movie is a bit older and was on the edge of the DVD/Blu-Ray transition. There is little to nothing in the way of extras, just a commentary track on the film by the director, Russell Chuck. You have to know what you are getting from a film like this. Yes, it is a formulaic action movie, with a very basic plot. The acting was as good as you would expect for a film like this, but it was not Shakespeare by any means. But if you accept it for what it is, it is a good way to kill 90 min when you just want to watch a fun movie that does not require a lot of thought and has a bunch of good-looking people in it.

DVD/Movie Review: The Rundown

The Rundown is a 2003 movie directed by Peter Berg and starring The Rock, Seann William Scott, Christopher Walken, and Rosario Dawson. The story involves the Rock's character, Beck, who is basically a bounty hunter for a rich loan shark (played by William Lucking). Beck is tasked with tracking down the boss' son (played by Scott in his most "un-Stifler like role yet) in Brazil as his final job, after which he will be paid enough to open a restaurant and pursue his real passion as a chef. Along the way he crosses paths with the head of a strip mining operation played wonderfully (albeit in an almost over-the-top "more cowbell" SNL parody of himself) Christopher Walken. Rosario Dawson plays a member of the local resistance, trying to get the mining company out of town.

This is the movie that, in my opinion, proved The Rock had some bona fide acting chops and acting range. That, of course, is not always a given for pro wrestlers turned actors (see Hulk Hogan and Jesse Ventura for the laughably bad end of the spectrum)This was just his third overall movie (after The Mummy Returns and The Scorpion King) and only his second in a leading role. It was a role that allowed him to be the action hero everyone thought he would be coming from the pro wrestling world, show off his sometimes underrated comedic side, and even allowed him to make fun of himself a little. It is certainly not an overly complicated plot, nor does it take much thought or energy to watch. That said, it is more than just a "shoot 'em up" kind of action movie, although there is plenty of that. If you are a fan of The Rock or just a fan of action movies, it is definitely worth checking out and makes for a good way to kill a couple hours.

The DVD bonus materials include two different commentary tracks on the movie. One includes The Rock and director Peter Berg, and the other is by a couple of producers. Then, there are about 45 minutes or so worth of behind-the-scenes, making-of features, and deleted scenes. It is definitely not a movie that will appeal to everyone. It would not ever win an Academy Award, but it is a good action movie that does not take itself too seriously. It is definitely worth a look.

4k-UHD/Movie Review: Jumanji - Welcome to the Jungle

This is the 2017 movie that is mostly a reboot and quasi-sequel to the 1995 movie, Jumanji, which starred Robin Williams. This version starts out with almost a vibe of the movie The Breakfast Club with four high school students named Spencer (played by Alex Wolff) who is a gaming and science nerd, Fridge (played by Ser'Darius Blain) who is a football star, Bethany (played by Madison Iseman), a self-absorbed hot chick, and Martha (played by Morgan Turner), an introverted loner, are assigned detention and forced to clean the school basement. They find an old video game that sucks them into the game when it boots up, with the twist being that they inhabit the bodies of the game characters, and find out they each have three lives with which to finish the game. Spencer becomes the leader Smolder Bravestone, (played by The Rock), Fridge becomes Smolder's sidekick, Mouse (played by Kevin Hart), Martha becomes Ruby Roundhouse (played by Karen Gillian), and Bethany becomes the cartographer played by Jack Black.

The movie is about the video game characters playing people who are totally opposite themselves, so the Rock is a sickly nerd who suddenly becomes a 6'5" musclebound tank, Karen Gillian plays an introvert who basically becomes Laura Croft (inappropriate jungle attire included), Kevin Hart plays a football player turned into a 5'3" loudmouth, and Jack Black has to play a hot high school girl turned overweight middle-aged man. The movie is a good blend of action and comedy, and the cast all play off each other very well. There are some very funny moments, including Karen Gillian commenting on the short shorts she is wearing and Kevin Hart's character's inability to eat cake. There are some tie-ins with the original movie, including paying homage to Robin William's character from the original movie. The movie has to walk a fine line between honoring the original with doing its own thing, which it does well.

For those who get the 4k set, the UHD disc just has the movie and then all of the extras are included on the regular blu-ray disc. The A/V quality of the UHD disc is very good, but it is not what I would call far beyond the a/v quality of the regular blu-ray disc. Both are pretty comparable. The extras include a gag reel, a music video by Nick Jonas (who has a role in the movie), and a handful of making-of and behind-the-scenes featurettes that vary in length from about four minutes to just under fifteen minutes. All totaled there are about 40 minutes, give or take, worth of extras if you like going through them.

Overall, the movie is very good. As I said above, it has a good blend of action and comedy, and all of the actors fit their roles very well. The Rock, Kevin Hart, Karen Gillian, and Jack Black all play their parts perfectly, and each of their characters get their moments to shine during the movie. It is definitely a more "adult" movie than the 1995 movie was and does include swearing and sex jokes. So, be aware that it is not as family-friendly as the original movie. That said, it is definitely worth watching.

4k-UHD/Movie Review: Baywatch

Baywatch is a 2017 movie that partly pays homage to and partly spoofs the long-running 1990s TV show of the same name. The movie stars Dwyane Johnson (a.k.a. The Rock) as Mitch Buchannon, the leader of a team of lifeguards in Emerald Bay that includes veterans Stephanie Holden (played by Ilfenesh Hadera) and C.J. Parker (played by Kelly Rohrbach, taking over the role played by Pamela Anderson in the show). The team holds tryouts for three open positions, that ultimately are filled with characters played by Alexandra Daddario, John Bass (who is pretty much the comic relief of the movie), and Zach Efron, who plays a former Olympic swimmer named Matt Brody, and is the butt of Mitch's constant jokes.

The plot of the movie involves the team having to solve a murder that involves a wider criminal plot. The other cast members include Priyanka Chopra, Rob Huebel, Hannibal Buress, and Oscar Nunez, and does have cameo appearances by Pamela Anderson and David Hasselhoff. You can watch the rated/theatrical version or the unrated/extended edition (which does not really add much to the story, just has a few more jokes.

For those who get the 4k set, there are two discs, a UHD disc, which just includes the movie, and a regular blu-ray disc with the movie and the bonus material. The A/V quality of the UHD disc is outstanding. Both the picture and sound are great, especially if you have a large screen and a decent sound system. There are a handful of extras which include a 21-minute feature on the various characters, a 10-minute feature on a look at the show's legacy and how the movie tried to pay homage to that, a 10-minute feature on the stunts, and then about 10 minutes of deleted and extended scenes.

The movie is basically an action-comedy, with the comedy being on the more raunchy side. So, it is definitely not a movie that will appeal to everyone. It has a bunch of ridiculously good-looking people in it, which is really the main attraction. It is definitely not an award-winner by any stretch of the imagination. But, if you take it for what it is, and do not expect it to be more than what it is, it is enjoyable.

4k-UHD/Movie Review: Fate of the Furious (F8)

The Fate of the Furious is the 8th movie in the "Fast" franchise. The plots of the movies have become crazier and more unrealistic over the course of time, and yes, this movie follows that trend (in this movie a missile is punched by The Rock) and you just have to go with it. If you cannot suspend your disbelief, these movies are not for you as the action sequences, which are fun, could never be pulled off in real life.

This movie sees Dom (Vin Diesel) as the bad guy, seemingly turning his back on the team/family. Of course, not everything is as it seems, as there is a larger plot that plays out throughout the course of the movie. The action sequences are crazy and there is some humor mixed in (including Hobbs and Shaw having to protect a baby while kicking ass). This is the movie that really set the stage for the Hobbs and Shaw spinoff as there are several entertaining sequences that include Jason Statham and The Rock. For the most part, the rest of the main cast returns, including Ludacris, Tyrese, Michelle Rodriguez, and Nathalie Emmanuel. Jordana Brewster does not return as her character, Mia, was written out to be off with Brian who retired after Paul Walker passed away. Kurt Russell reprises his role as Mr. Nobody, and the new cast members include Scott Eastwood and Charlize Theron.

The 4k set is a two-disc set with just the movie itself on the UHD disc and the movie and all the extras on a regular blu-ray disc. The A/V quality of the UHD disc is very good. Probably a tick under "reference quality" video, but for anyone other than a total A/V wonk, it will be fine. The extras include an 8-minute featurette on shooting in Cuba, a four-part featurette about the main characters, a three-part featurette on the car racing culture, a three-part featurette on the stunts, and extended fight scenes. There is a director's commentary on the movie that is included both on the UHD disc and the regular blu-ray. All totaled, the bonus content runs about an hour, give or take.

Ultimately, if you like the prior movies, you will probably like this one. If you do not like the prior movies, especially the movies after Tokyo Drift, then you will not like this one. It is totally unrealistic and over-the-top, but that is cooked into the series at this point. Charlize Theron is awesome in her role and definitely seemed to be having fun in this role. This was the movie in which the battle between The Rock and Vin Diesel came to a head, with The Rock refusing to do any more of the "main franchise" movies.  If you don't take it too seriously it is a good, fun, action movie.

Blu-Ray/Movie Review: Furious 7

Furious 7 is the 2015 entry in the Fast and Furious franchise. It was directed by James Wan and stars Paul Walker, Vin Diesel, Michelle Rodriguez, Nathalie Emmanuel, Jason Statham, Kurt Russell, and The Rock. Ronda Rousey has an extended cameo appearance in the movie, and Paul Walker's brother, Brian, played a stand-in to finish Paul Walker's scenes after his tragic death partway through the filming of the movie. This movie is definitely a turning point for the Fast & Furious franchise, in large part because of Paul Walker's death. The movie, finally, deals with Han's death in Tokyo Drift, which on film occurred years earlier, but Sung Kang kept appearing in the subsequent movies always hinting that he would get to Tokyo. In this movie, it is revealed that Han was killed by the brother of Own Shaw (Luke Evans), Deckard, played by Jason Statham. The movie is essentially about the team trying to track down Deckard and get revenge for Han. The movie has the typical over-the-top action that has become the staple of the film series, especially after all the main actors returned to the franchise after Tokyo Drift. There are a lot of tongue-in-cheek absurd moments like The Rock flexing out of a cast and leaving the hospital to get back into the fight after he is sidelined most of the movie. The movie also introduced the character Mr. Nobody, a covert ops leader played by Kurt Russell, and the cameo appearance by Rhonda Rousey, who is basically in the movie to have a throwdown with Michelle Rodriquez.

For those who get the blu-ray set, the movie looks and sounds great in HD. Of course, there are a ton of special effects used throughout the movie, and everything looks wonderful and seamless. There are two versions of the movie, the theatrical and an extended edition that adds about a minute to the theatrical version. It is so inconsequential that it was really not worth making an extended edition. Then, there are about six minutes of deleted scenes, seven making-of and behind-the-scenes featurettes that range in length from about six minutes to just over thirty minutes. Then there is a feature on the Race Wars festival, the music video "See You Again" from Wiz Khalifa and Charlie Puth, and a feature on the Fast & Furious-themed ride at Universal.

Overall, the movie is good but much more emotional than it was intended to be. It is the last entry in the franchise before it got completely ridiculous (although there are plenty of ridiculous moments in this one, too). I am sure most people know how the movie handled Paul Walker's death in terms of Brian's storyline. I will not spoil it for the handful of people who don't know, but I think it was very well done. The movie is 95% action, 5.9% tongue-in-cheek comedy, and .1% drama. The franchise has found the formula that works for it and stays in that lane. It does not try to be a best-picture candidate, so if that is what you are looking for, this is not it. But if you want to watch a fun action movie with a bunch of car chases and cool stunts, this is a good one.

Blu-Ray/Movie Review: G.I. Joe: Retaliation

This movie is kind of a sequel to the first GI Joe movie, Rise of Cobra, continuing part of that storyline and then branching way off of it, so it then mostly becomes a reboot. Some of the cast members from the first movie do make an appearance, but most of them amount to extended cameos. Some roles were recast, and some of the characters, such as The Baroness and Destro were not used in this movie. This one stars The Rock as Roadblock and Adrienne Palicki as Lady Jaye, the two main Joe characters (along with Snake Eyes, played by Ray Park). The bulk of the story involves the plot by Cobra to use Zartan to impersonate the President of the United States and bring down GI Joe. There is a large parallel story that involves Snake Eyes and Storm Shadow and goes into their rivalry.

The A/V quality of the Blu-Ray is very good. The picture looks great, and the special effects are seamless. The extras include a commentary track on the movie by the director and producer, then there are just over an hour's worth of making-of and behind-the-scenes featurettes, as well as a few deleted scenes. So if you like watching the bonus material there is a decent amount.

Overall, the movie is a good action movie, but not great. Not even as good as the first movie (in my opinion). I would have liked more of the characters to come back and not just have small roles. I am fine using the additional characters but I would have liked more of a conclusion to Duke and Baroness' storyline and bring back characters like Scarlett and Ripcord. I also think that expanding the role of Cobra Commander with Joseph Gordon Levitt and bringing back Christopher Eccleston as Destro would have been a wise move. Obviously, like the first movie, this is not an academy award-winning drama. It is a summer blockbuster action movie, and it most definitely stays in that lane. But, if you are looking for an action movie with tons of explosions and great fight scenes, this is definitely a good one.
