Here you will find things about fitness and nutrition, mainly (but not exclusively) in relation to the Beachbody programs like P90x and Insanity. And, I will start adding reviews for Books, DVDs and Blu-Rays, and other products. All views and opinions on this blog are my own.
Welcome
Welcome to my ever-evolving blog. It started out as a blog on Beachbody workouts and products, mainly when I was a Beachbody coach. I no longer coach, not because I don't believe in Beachbody's programs (I subscribe to Beachbody on Demand and use their workouts every day), I am just not a salesperson and hated that aspect of it. I am more than willing to answer questions about my experiences with their products and the various workouts, and I feel freer to do so without the appearance of giving a biased review of something.
I have also started adding reviews for various things I have purchased like movies, books, CDs, and other products. This was brought about by a fight with Amazon in which all of my reviews were removed over a completely bullshit allegation that I posted a review that violated their terms of service. After going back and forth with the morons in the community-reviews department (even after they admitted that my posts did not violate their guidelines) they restored my account (which took them six months to do), but I have been posting my reviews on my blog to have them preserved in case something like that happens again. And here, I will post uncensored reviews so I will swear from time to time and post reviews that may be longer than Amazon's character limit. Everything I post here on any topic or product is my personal opinion, and I take no compensation for any product reviews I post. I am a member of Amazon's vine program and because I get those products for free, I keep those reviews on Amazon only, but everything I have purchased with my own money, whether from Amazon or some other store/website/outlet, I will post here.
I also plan to do some longer blog posts on various topics, such as how to learn physics, how to get through calculus, and longer reviews of workout programs as I do them. Basically, whatever strikes me as interesting at the time. As you can see if you navigate around the blog, I had many years in between postings. During that time I was going back to school to get an engineering degree, and learning material that I avoided my first time through college was a different experience and one that gave me a lot of insight into how to do well in those classes, which I will try to impart here for those who are looking to get a science or engineering degree.

Workout Update: Insanity Max 30/Chalean Extreme/Body Beast/P90X Hybrid Day 25
Day 25 was the last Tabata Strength workout for this round. It is definitely the hardest workout for me to get through from the first month of Max 30, and the one I like the least. By far. I again maxed out at the 11:15 mark, during the diamond push-up holds.

Book Review: History in One Act: A Novel of 9/11
Another thing the author does is use fictional material to fill in the blanks on things that were uncovered during the investigation of the attacks but could not be fully explained. For example, when KSM was interrogated, he said he was surprised that the south tower of the WTC was hit and that the original plan was to hit the north tower, the white house, the Pentagon, and the capital. So, the author makes up a reason for why the terrorists decided to hit both towers. He also mixes in things that are known, like the fact that a couple of the hijackers who ended up being muscle hijackers were originally supposed to be pilots but were not smart enough to make it through pilot training into the story.
As I said above, it can be hard to separate the fiction from the non-fiction, but overall, it does give a high-level overview of things that did happen and details things that could have happened. There are a ton of endnotes that would have been much better as footnotes because, much of the time, they add a ton of detail. Flipping from the page you are reading to the endnotes and back can be a pain. And if you read the endnotes after finishing the main portion of the book, they can be hard to follow. Overall, it is a good book. It is very long (over 700 pages if you read all the endnotes), so it may take a while to get through, depending on how quickly you read. Ultimately, you have to take some of what is in the book with a grain of salt and understand that the purpose was not to write a non-fiction account of everything that happened in the lead-up to 9/11.
Blu-Ray/Movie Review: Inside Out
The story is one of those that can appeal to kids and adults alike. It will probably have the biggest emotional impact for adults who have children and experience their changing emotions as they grow up, but even if you are an adult without kids, it will definitely have something that reminds you of your childhood and teenage/young adult years. The acting is phenomenal with Poehler great as the lead, and all of the supporting characters doing a wonderful job in their roles. Lewis Black can melt down with the best of them, and having Anger fly off the handle provided some of the funniest moments, along with disgust hating everything. And, Richard Kind as Bing Bong steals pretty much every scene he is in.
For those who get the blu-ray, the A/V quality is great, and there are a lot of extras. Those include a commentary track on the movie, and several making-of and behind-the-scenes featurettes that range in length from just under five minutes to just under twenty minutes. Then there are three different trailers. So, a lot of good material if you like watching the extras.
Overall, the movie is very good. It goes from being a fun, funny kid's movie to a tear-jerker, sometimes within a single scene. It has a good message and is something people of all ages can enjoy for a long time. It is one of those timeless movies that will be just as good twenty or thirty years from now as it was when it was released. Definitely worth the pick-up.
Workout Update: Insanity Max 30/Chalean Extreme/Body Beast/P90X Hybrid Day 24
Day 24 was the last Sweat Intervals workout from Max 30 in my modified round, and I was able to make it through without stopping. This is the second workout this week that I made it all the way to the end without taking an unscheduled break. I have no illusions of that happening either tomorrow or Friday, or that I would get through it without maxing out if I was not modifying. But, it is a nice measure of progress.

Workout Review: Beachbody Insanity Sanity Check DVD Workout: an Introduction to Insanity
This is basically a truncated version of an Insanity workout. It is short, just 25 minutes in all, and has a lot more breaks than the regular workouts do. All of the moves are moves that you will see in the regular workouts at some point. The idea is, once you can get through this workout without stopping (other than at the scheduled breaks) you are good to go for the regular workouts. It can also be used for a "recovery week" between the first and second phases of Insanity (basically between month one and month two). Keep in mind, the first Insanity program did not have any modified moves (unlike the later Insanity Max 30 program). So, none of the moves in this workout are modified. Although, if you have done Max-30 you can easily figure out how to modify them. But, the premise is that you will do the workout without modifying anything, which is why everyone in the cast is in great shape, and even they get gassed. The workout is available on the Beachbody on Demand app for those who are considering that instead of the DVDs. But, either way, you get it, it is definitely worth using if you are not sure if you are ready to do the regular Insanity workouts.

DVD/TV Series Review: Hart of Dixie: Season 4
Season four of Hart of Dixie is a shorter season (just ten episodes to accommodate Rachel Bilson's real-life pregnancy so the show could wrap before she gave birth) that ties up the various storylines. The show continues to be very much a primetime soap opera and the focus is on the ever-shifting relationships. Early in the season Lavon and George are forced to work together as volunteer firefighters despite their feelings for Lemon, and Lavon having chased after Lemon to try to get to her before she left on the cruise. Zoe and Wade are doing the will-they-wont-they get together dance. There is also a love square between Lemon, George, Annabeth, and Lavon, as well as Brick having to sort out his love life. So, there is a lot to pack into the ten episodes.
The DVD set is just a made-on-demand set that has the episodes only. There are no extras, which on one hand is not a surprise since Bilson would not have been available to participate in anything that was put together after the show wrapped, but disappointing given that it was the final season of the show. So really, unless you really have a preference for physical discs over streaming, the only reason to get the DVD set is to keep a collection complete, which probably means you prefer the physical discs to streaming.
Overall, the final season is good but definitely rushed. Even so, the storylines are tied up well, and the show uses a flash-forward to give fans an idea of how the main characters turn out. The "fish out of water" plot that was the focus of season 1 was pretty much scrapped as Zoe had committed to staying in Bluebell, so really the only mystery is what characters would end up together. The acting was good even if the writing could get a bit sappy at times (which pretty much is the case with all prime-time dramas that lean toward the soap opera end of the spectrum).
Workout Update: Insanity Max 30/Chalean Extreme/Body Beast/P90X Hybrid Day 23
Day 23 was the Tabata Strength workout from Max 30 again. I still cannot get very far into this one before I max out (just over 11 minutes). I was actually under my max-out time from last Thursday by about 20 seconds or so. It is definitely the hardest of the month-one workouts for me. But I got it over with, and now on with the rest of my day.

Blu-Ray/TV Series Review: Hannibal - Season 3
Hannibal is the critically acclaimed show by Bryan Fuller, who has created many shows (like Wonderfalls and Pushing Daises) that had a lot of critical acclaim and devoted cult followings but never got great ratings. Hannibal falls into that category and ultimately was canceled before it was able to get a proper resolution. Season three picks up months after the events that ended season two in which Lecter was revealed as the Chesapeake Ripper and attacked Jack, Will, and Alana and left them all for dead. We find out the fates of each one of them (and Abagail Hobbs, who was revealed to be alive), but not immediately in the first episode. The first half of the season was adapted from the Hannibal and Hannibal Rising storylines with Hannibal and Bedelia Du Maurier living in Europe under assumed identities. The second half of the season adapts the Red Dragon storyline and brings in Richard Armitage (from the Hobbit movies) as Francis Dolarhyde and Rutina Wesley (from True Blood) as Reba McClane. The season, and thus the series, ends on a pretty big cliffhanger and an epilogue that hints at the outcome of the cliffhanger.
The A/V quality of the blu-ray is, like with the prior season releases, very good. There are also a ton of extras included in the set. There are ten commentary tracks, so most of the episodes, which include various members of the cast and showrunners providing commentary. Then there are deleted scenes, a gag reel, and the series of postmortem segments with cast member Scott Thompson (that run about an hour combined). Then there are a series of making-of featurettes, the shortest of which runs just under 17-minutes, and the longest that runs over two hours devoted to reimagining the Red Dragon storyline. So, if you like bonus material, this gives you a lot.
Overall, the series is very good. Of course, it is very gory and violent. There is not much in the way of sex, but the gore is over-the-top. The acting is top-notch all around. The writers definitely took a chance ending the show on a cliffhanger without a true resolution, and the show ended up being canceled after most of the filming wrapped so we never do get a true resolution of the story. That said, it is still a great series that is worth watching even if not everything gets wrapped up in a nice bow.

Workout Update: Insanity Max 30/Chalean Extreme/Body Beast/P90X Hybrid Day 22
Day 22 was Cardio Challenge again, and I actually made it all the way through without stopping (of course doing the modified version). I definitely had to push myself to make it to the 25-minute break, but once I got through that I made it through the last round of three moves without pausing. I am not sure that I could do that if I was not modifying it, but we will see how that goes after the first round is done. But, I definitely feel like I am making progress.

Blu-Ray/Movie Review: Indecent Proposal
Moore and Harrelson play David and Diana Murphy, a young couple in financial trouble because of the recession. Of course, they decide the best way to remedy this is to use the last of their savings to go to Vegas to win the money. Per the Vegas stereotype, they win big initially, and instead of learning when to stop, they lose all their money. Enter Redford, a billionaire named John Gage who spots Diana looking at dresses. He offers the couple a million dollars to have sex with Diana. That is really all the setup that is needed. The story is pretty predictable, but it plays out well.
For those who get the blu-ray, the A/V quality is good, but the movie did not get an extensive restoration by any means. Even so, it was shot very well initially, and that definitely comes through. The only extra is a commentary track on the movie by the director, Adrian Lyne. It is an okay commentary, but not anything spectacular.
Overall, the movie is good but not great. It is a pretty standard love triangle story, and it was somewhat famous for being one of the first (if not the first) movies in which Demi Moore (who to this day is in phenomenal shape) did any nudity. It amounted to a quick topless shot at the beginning of the movie (but they were spectacular), and then she was in lingerie in a couple of scenes. The acting is very good and probably saved what was pretty mediocre writing in parts of the movie. It is not what I would call a must-see movie, but it is worth checking out. I am not sure if the movie is available on any of the streaming services for free or not, so if you want it, the disc is probably the best way to get it, even if there are not a ton of extras.

Blu-Ray/Movie Review: The Hobbit: Battle of the Five Armies (Extended Edition)
For those who get the blu-ray, the A/V quality is top-notch, as good or better than the Lord of the Rings movies. Most of the CGI is seamless with the practical effects, and it sounds great, especially if you have a good sound system. As with the extended edition of the other movies, there are a ton of extras. Those include a commentary track on the movie by Peter Jackson and his co-writer Philippa Boyens. Then there is part three of the Home to Middle-Earth segments, about filming in New Zealand. The crown jewel of the bonus content are the appendices (parts 11 and 12). Each of them has over four hours (each) of making-of and behind-the-scenes material that goes through pretty much the entire process of making the movie.
Overall, this is good, but like the other extended editions is really only for hardcore fans (or people who really like watching the bonus content). If you are a casual fan of the movies and you don't care about the blu-ray extras you are going to be paying a lot more for something that is not really going to interest you all that much. It is a good capstone to Peter Jackson's series of movies, and while I am one who thinks that the story of the Hobbit could have easily been told in two shorter movies, this is still worth watching.
Workout Update: Insanity Max 30/Chalean Extreme/Body Beast/P90X Hybrid Day 20
Today was the third go-around with the P90X back and biceps workout. I was able to hit 10 reps on a couple of the exercises, but I was maxing out on most of them at 8 or 9 reps. And, for the exercises that had 16 reps, I was barely finishing with the selected weight, so those will stay the same. I was able to do more reps on all of the band moves, except for the corn cobs (I am with Bobby, I hate them). So, overall, it was a good workout.
