Day 14 was the rest day in both Max 30 and Power 90, so I did the two recovery routines from Lift 4. I found that my flexibility in the stretch routine is getting better, and the foam rolling is getting a lot of knots out of my hamstrings and calves. Since I slacked on doing these the last couple of rounds of Lift 4, I wanted to do them on the off days from Max 30 and Power 90 since my flexibility has regressed lately.
Here you will find things about fitness and nutrition, mainly (but not exclusively) in relation to the Beachbody programs like P90x and Insanity. And, I will start adding reviews for Books, DVDs and Blu-Rays, and other products. All views and opinions on this blog are my own.
Welcome
Welcome to my ever-evolving blog. It started out as a blog on Beachbody workouts and products, mainly when I was a Beachbody coach. I no longer coach, not because I don't believe in Beachbody's programs (I subscribe to Beachbody on Demand and use their workouts every day), I am just not a salesperson and hated that aspect of it. I am more than willing to answer questions about my experiences with their products and the various workouts, and I feel freer to do so without the appearance of giving a biased review of something.
I have also started adding reviews for various things I have purchased like movies, books, CDs, and other products. This was brought about by a fight with Amazon in which all of my reviews were removed over a completely bullshit allegation that I posted a review that violated their terms of service. After going back and forth with the morons in the community-reviews department (even after they admitted that my posts did not violate their guidelines) they restored my account (which took them six months to do), but I have been posting my reviews on my blog to have them preserved in case something like that happens again. And here, I will post uncensored reviews so I will swear from time to time and post reviews that may be longer than Amazon's character limit. Everything I post here on any topic or product is my personal opinion, and I take no compensation for any product reviews I post. I am a member of Amazon's vine program and because I get those products for free, I keep those reviews on Amazon only, but everything I have purchased with my own money, whether from Amazon or some other store/website/outlet, I will post here.
I also plan to do some longer blog posts on various topics, such as how to learn physics, how to get through calculus, and longer reviews of workout programs as I do them. Basically, whatever strikes me as interesting at the time. As you can see if you navigate around the blog, I had many years in between postings. During that time I was going back to school to get an engineering degree, and learning material that I avoided my first time through college was a different experience and one that gave me a lot of insight into how to do well in those classes, which I will try to impart here for those who are looking to get a science or engineering degree.

Workout Update: Insanity Max 30/Power 90 Hybrid: Day 13
On Day 13, I did the sweat 1-2 routine (and ab-ripper 100) in the morning and sculpt 1-2 in the evening. Both workouts went well. The yoga in the sweat workout continues to get a bit easier as does the ab-ripper routine. In the sculpt workout, I used 15 lbs for each exercise again. I think next week I will bump everything but the shoulder exercises up to 17.5 lbs and keep doing the shoulder exercises with the 15 lb weight.
Workout Update: Insanity Max 30/Power 90 Hybrid: Day 12
On day 12, I just did the Friday Fight workout in the evening. I was busy during the morning and could not do it then, and I did not feel like doing both workouts back-to-back in the evening. I made it a few more minutes into the workout before I maxed out than I did last week. I made it to the 14:50 mark, but could not quite make it to the 15-minute mark where the first scheduled break comes up. Tomorrow, I am going to do both Power-90 workouts since I did not do the Sweat 1-2 routine today.
Workout Update: Insanity Max 30/Power 90 Hybrid: Day 11
Day 11 was the last time doing Tabata Power in this round and then in the evening, the sculpt 1-2 workout from Power 90. I was able to make it just over 25 minutes into the Max 30 workout before I had to take an unscheduled break. I wanted to get through the entire thing, but I was too worn out by that point. The sculpt workout from Power 90 went well. I again used 15 lbs weights for every exercise, and did 15 reps for each exercise.
Workout Update: Insanity Max 30/Power 90 Hybrid: Day 10
Day 10 was Sweat Intervals again in Max 30 and Sweat 1-2 and ab-ripper 100 in Power 90. I again was able to get through the entire 30 minutes in the Sweat Intervals workout without taking an unscheduled break (doing the low-impact modifications). I was more tired in the evening workout so I did not go as hard in that one during the cardio portion. I could tell that the yoga portion is getting a little easier than it was on Day 1, so I am making progress there.
Blu-Ray/TV Series Review: Charmed (2018): Season 3
The blu-ray (and DVD) set is a four-disc set. The episodes can be played with English captions and can be played in a "play all" mode that allows you to pick up where you leave off. The only bonus feature is a short gag reel on the fourth disc. The A/V quality of the blu-ray is very good, and the effects look wonderful in HD. As with seasons 1 and 2, the third season is only available in the US individually on DVD. Only the complete series is available on blu-ray.
The series keeps the same style and tone as it did during the first two seasons. It primarily uses a serial storyline that builds throughout the season. Unlike the original series, this one incorporates real-world social issues into the storylines, including racism and LGBT issues. Of course, that will piss off a segment of people who will never watch the show, while others may like that, and others may be neutral toward it. I tend to fall into the later camp. The show would have been fine without those elements, but they do not detract from the overall storytelling. The writers do a decent job of juggling storylines for the large ensemble cast, providing material for all the main characters. Although there were episodes in which some characters were used sparingly, so the storyline could focus on one or two characters. The writers also wrote Melonie Diaz's real-life pregnancy into the storyline toward the end of the season. If you enjoyed the first two seasons, you will probably enjoy the third. If you did not like either of the first two seasons, this one is not going to do anything to change your mind. Ultimately, if you have liked the series up to this point, season three is worth watching.

Workout Update: Insanity Max 30/Power 90 Hybrid: Day 9
On day 9, I did Tabata Power in Max 30 and the Sculpt 1-2 workout in the evening. I maxed out at the 24:44 mark, which is a little longer into the workout (by a handful of seconds) than I got the last time. For the sculpt workout, I increased the weight to 15 lbs and was able to do 15 reps on all the exercises with that weight (although it was very difficult for the shoulder raises and the 21s in the last block).
Workout Update: Insanity Max 30/Power 90 Hybrid: Day 8
Day 8 was the start of week 2 for both workout programs. That meant the second time doing cardio challenge in Max 30 in the morning, and the Sweat 1-2 and ab-ripper 100 in Power 90. I was able to do all 30 minutes of cardio challenge without taking an unscheduled break. But, I was a bit tired in the evening for the Power 90 workout, so I did not push as hard in that one.

Blu-Ray/TV Series Review: Charmed (2018): Season 2
The Blu-Ray (and DVD) set is a four-disc set. In the US, the individual seasons are only available on DVD, but you can get the complete series on Blu-Ray, which has the individual seasons packaged in a decorative box. The A/V quality of the Blu-Rays is excellent. There are no bonus features for the second season release, just the episodes spread across the four discs. The series continues to use mostly serial story arcs that build with each episode. The special effects are great, the acting is very good, and the writing is mostly good. Like the parent series, the writing can be uneven and a bit silly, in a different way. Where the sisters on the original series were always obsessing over needing a man in their lives, the sisters in this series are always going on about their independence and not needing relationships (but still trying to find one). One thing that I think the show could have benefitted from this season is tying the show to the original series. There was an episode that would have been perfect to name drop the Halliwell sisters (or even have one or more of them appear). However, I think the writers were still focused on having the series stand on its own (even though it does put its own twist on storylines from the original series from time to time).
Because filming ended early, the season does not end on any cliffhangers or with an episode that feels like a season finale. So, there will likely be hanging storylines from this season that will be wrapped up in season three. Overall, if you liked the first season, you will probably like the second one. Conversely, if you hated season one, nothing about this season is likely to change your mind. Ultimately, the season is entertaining and worth watching.

Workout Update: Insanity Max 30/Power 90 Hybrid: Day 7
Day 7 was the rest day in both Max 30 and Power 90, so I did the two recovery workouts from Lift 4, doing the stretch routine first and the foam rolling routine second. The foam rolling absolutely helped. I did not have as many knots in my legs as I thought I would, but I still felt it.
Workout Update: Insanity Max 30/Power 90 Hybrid: Day 6
Day 6 was the optional rest day in Max 30 (which I took) and Sculpt 1-2 in Power 90. I again used the 12 lb weight for every exercise in the workout. Because there is almost no rest between sets, even the exercises where I could use heavier weights on (like Lawnmowers) still burn by the end of the 15 reps.

Workout Update: Insanity Max 30/Power 90 Hybrid: Day 5
Day 5 was Friday Fight Round 1 in Max 30 and Sweat 1-2 and ab-ripper 100 in Power 90.
The Friday Fight workout is slightly different from the others in the first week of Max 30. You do the same kind of five-minute warmup, then ten exercises for a minute each before the first break. After the 30-second break, you do another nine exercises (again for one minute each), and then you get another 30-second break. Finally, you finish with four exercises. So, each exercise in the workout is performed for a longer duration and you get fewer breaks. In this one, I maxed out a little over 11 minutes into the workout.
The Power 90 workout went fine, but I was still a bit tired from the morning workout, so I did not try to overdo it. The ab-ripper portion of the workout was again a little easier today.

Workout Update: Insanity Max 30/Power 90 Hybrid: Day 4
Day 4 was Tabata Power (for the second time this week) in Max 30 and Sculpt 1-2 in Power 90.
Tabata Power was still tough, even modifying the moves, but it was a little easier than on Tuesday. I was able to make it a little bit farther into the workout before maxing out, but I still could not get through the entire triceps dip sequence without taking a break. I maxed out at a little over 24 minutes, about a minute before the modifier, who is in phenomenal shape, maxes out in that workout.
For the Sweat 1-2 workout, I decided to take a different approach, which I plan to use all through Power 90. Basically, I am going to use the same weight for all the exercises and do 15 reps of each exercise. When I can easily do 15 reps for everything, then I will bump the weight up. That should make it easier to get through all the exercises since the transitions in the workout are very quick, and you do not have much time to grab different weights before you have to start performing the next exercise. For this workout, I used 12 lb weights which were very light for the back exercises, but a little heavier for the shoulder flys and the back scratchers (which I think I am going to swap for Lift-4's one arm triceps extension). I will probably use the same weight for Saturday's workout and then bump it up to 15 lbs next week.

Workout Update: Insanity Max 30/Power 90 Hybrid: Day 3
Day 3 was the Cardio Intervals workout in Max 30 and Sweat 1-2 in Power 90.
The intervals workout was definitely challenging. It has several blocks where you do three exercises back-to-back three times, and then you get a 30-second break every five minutes. Each block has an exercise that requires you to be in a plank (e.g., push-up punches, ski-abs, wide-pike ups, burpee lunges, etc.). I barely made it all 30 minutes without taking an unscheduled break (I wanted to take a break a couple of times during the burpee lunges in the final block). If I were not modifying, I would have likely maxed out around the six-minute mark.
The evening workout was Sweat 1-2 again, and it was easier than on Monday. My flexibility in the initial stretch and yoga portion was a bit better and I did not get as winded in the cardio portion. And, ab-ripper 100 was easier than on Monday. So, overall, both workouts went well.

Workout Update: Insanity Max 30/Power 90 Hybrid: Day 2
Day 2 consisted of two full-body workouts, one using all body weight (Tabata Power in Max 30) and one using mostly dumbbell weight (Sculpt 1-2 in Power 90). In the Max 30 workout, I made it just under 24 minutes (during the triceps dips sequence) before maxing out. Basically, in the Max 30 workout, you work chest, legs, core, and triceps, doing each exercise twice. You do each exercise for 20 seconds, actively rest for 10 seconds, then do the exercise again for 20 seconds, actively rest for 10 seconds, then go to the next exercise. Every five minutes, you get a 30 second break.
In the sweat 1-2 workout, you do three blocks consisting of six exercises that you do 8 to 15 reps. If you have done P90x, you will recognize every exercise; the difference is that there is almost no rest between the exercises. Tony and the two cast members each use mostly the same weight for each exercise, so they are doing light weight for 15 reps. Tony and the female cast member use adjustable weights, which they may adjust between the exercises when the cut scene showing the form of the exercise plays. The male cast member uses a band, and it does not appear that he switches bands. Each workout went well, but the Max 30 workout was definitely harder.

Workout Update: Insanity Max 30/Power 90 Hybrid: Day 1
This was the start of a new workout round and I went back to the original Power 90 workout, which was the precursor to P90x as my evening workout and Insanity Max 30 (following the modifier) as my morning workout. Day 1 was Cardio Challenge in Max 30, and Sweat 1-2 followed by Ab-Ripper 100 in Power 90.
The idea behind the Max 30 workout is to write down the time you must take an unscheduled break the first time, and each week, have a later "max out" time in that workout. Today, I made it a little under 22-minutes into the workout (while following the low-impact modifier) before I had to break. The evening Power 90 workout was tougher than I expected. It has been ages since I have done yoga, so the few minutes of yoga at the beginning of the workout were tough. The cardio portion of the workout was not too bad because Tony and the two cast members were going slow, but there were a couple of spots where I had to pause for a second and get water. The ab-ripper workout has ten exercises and you do ten reps for each exercise. The exercises get progressively harder as you go through the workout, so the last few were very tough for me to get through all ten reps.
Workout Update: Lift 4/Shaun 20/645 Cardio hybrid: Day 54
Day 54 was the last full workout of Lift 4. So, in the morning, it was the cardio circuit workout from Shaun 20 and full-body HIIT in the evening. Both workouts went okay but were challenging.

Workout Update: Lift 4/Shaun 20/645 Cardio hybrid: Day 53
On day 53, I did the Pure Cardio routine from Shaun 20 and the Shoulders (circuit) routine from Lift 4. Shoulders was very hard, and, like last week, I started out with the higher weight for all the exercises but had to drop the amount of weight I used for some exercises by the third set. Also, by the time I got to the burnout round, I could not do full curls with 15lbs and had to drop that to 10 in order to do the curls for the full 30 seconds with proper form.
Workout Update: Lift 4/Shaun 20/645 Cardio hybrid: Day 52
Day 54 was the rest day for Lift 4, so I did the 645 cardio routine in the evening. Again, I slacked off and did not do either of the recovery workouts.
Workout Update: Lift 4/Shaun 20/645 Cardio hybrid: Day 51
On day 51, I did the Cardio Circuit workout from Shaun 20, and the legs (50/50) workout from Lift 4. Like the chest and back workout yesterday, the leg workout has the same exercises as last week, but in a different order. Also, like last week's version of the leg workout, you do each of the three exercises for 30 seconds in each set in the HIIT portion. It was challenging, but I was able to use the same amount of weight for this week's workout as I did last week for all the exercises.

Workout Update: Lift 4/Shaun 20/645 Cardio hybrid: Day 50
Day 50 was the start of week 8 (the final week) in Lift 4. I did Shaun 20's Pure Cardio workout in the morning and then Lift 4's chest and back (circuit) workout in the evening. I was able to maintain the same weight that I used in the chest and back workout last week. It is basically the same workout, but the exercise order is switched around. It was still a challenge because of having little to no rest between the exercises and only a few seconds of rest between the sets.
