Welcome

Welcome to my ever-evolving blog. It started out as a blog on Beachbody workouts and products, mainly when I was a Beachbody coach. I no longer coach, not because I don't believe in Beachbody's programs (I subscribe to Beachbody on Demand and use their workouts every day), I am just not a salesperson and hated that aspect of it. I am more than willing to answer questions about my experiences with their products and the various workouts, and I feel freer to do so without the appearance of giving a biased review of something.

I have also started adding reviews for various things I have purchased like movies, books, CDs, and other products. This was brought about by a fight with Amazon in which all of my reviews were removed over a completely bullshit allegation that I posted a review that violated their terms of service. After going back and forth with the morons in the community-reviews department (even after they admitted that my posts did not violate their guidelines) they restored my account (which took them six months to do), but I have been posting my reviews on my blog to have them preserved in case something like that happens again. And here, I will post uncensored reviews so I will swear from time to time and post reviews that may be longer than Amazon's character limit. Everything I post here on any topic or product is my personal opinion, and I take no compensation for any product reviews I post. I am a member of Amazon's vine program and because I get those products for free, I keep those reviews on Amazon only, but everything I have purchased with my own money, whether from Amazon or some other store/website/outlet, I will post here.

I also plan to do some longer blog posts on various topics, such as how to learn physics, how to get through calculus, and longer reviews of workout programs as I do them. Basically, whatever strikes me as interesting at the time.  As you can see if you navigate around the blog, I had many years in between postings. During that time I was going back to school to get an engineering degree, and learning material that I avoided my first time through college was a different experience and one that gave me a lot of insight into how to do well in those classes, which I will try to impart here for those who are looking to get a science or engineering degree.

Workout Update: Insanity Max 30/Chalean Extreme/Body Beast/P90X Hybrid Day Round 2 Day 14

Day 14 was a return to P90x and the Back and Biceps workout. I think I like this one a little better than the Body Beast workout, especially since right now I have limited space for a home gym so I really don't have room to have a bench and barbell set up. Someday that will be the case and I will definitely return to Body Beast, but right now P90x workouts are the better option for me with limited space.

Workout Update: Insanity Max 30/Chalean Extreme/Body Beast/P90X Hybrid Day Round 2 Day 13

Day 13 was just a rest day. I was not feeling well at all (I think I caught a bit of a stomach bug) so I did not even do Recharge. I mainly just stayed in bed all day and tried to get some rest.

Workout Update: Insanity Max 30/Chalean Extreme/Body Beast/P90X Hybrid Day Round 2 Day 12

Day 12 was Friday Fight Round 1 again. Overall, the workout went fairly well even though I was a bit tired going into it. I was able to do more unmodified moves and can definitely feel my stamina getting better. I maxed out about the same point as last week, making it a few more seconds (pretty much as I have done with all of the workouts this week).

Workout Update: Insanity Max 30/Chalean Extreme/Body Beast/P90X Hybrid Day Round 2 Day 11

Day 11 was the last Tabata Power workout for this round. Overall, it went about the same as it did on Tuesday. I was able to max out a few seconds later than I did on Tuesday, and was able to do more of the half-tuck jumps both at the beginning and the end of the workout. I still have to modify all of the push-up moves and max out during the triceps dips.

Workout Update: Insanity Max 30/Chalean Extreme/Body Beast/P90X Hybrid Day Round 2 Day 10

Day 10 was the sweat intervals workout again. Nothing major to report on this one. I am still maxing out fairly early into the workout, but I have a feeling that will be the case for a while.

Workout Update: Insanity Max 30/Chalean Extreme/Body Beast/P90X Hybrid Day Round 2 Day 9

Day 9 was the Tabata Power workout again. This went about the same as it did last week, although my back is feeling better so I was able to do more unmodified moves. I am still doing half-tuck jumps to protect my back, but I can do more of them for a longer duration before I switch over to the modified versions.  I maxed out at just over 23 minutes during the tricep dip portion of the workout.

Workout Update: Insanity Max 30/Chalean Extreme/Body Beast/P90X Hybrid Day Round 2 Day 8

Day 8 was Cardio Challenge from Max 30. Honestly, I did not have a very good workout today. I did not get a lot of sleep thanks to the Daylight Saving Time change and I think I ate a bit too much too close in time to working out. So, I was having to take a lot of breaks and slog through. But, I did get it done.

Workout Update: Insanity Max 30/Chalean Extreme/Body Beast/P90X Hybrid Day Round 2 Day 7

Day 7 was the fourth of the Body Beast back and biceps workout from the build portion of that program. Next week I am going to do a five-week cycle of the p90x back and biceps workout to transition back to that. The weights I used for the body beast workout remained the same, but I think I may be able to bump a couple of the p90x exercises up in weight since the last time I did that workout. We will see how things go.

Workout Update: Insanity Max 30/Chalean Extreme/Body Beast/P90X Hybrid Day Round 2 Day 6

Day 6 was the Recharge stretch/yoga routine from CE. It went about the same as it did the past couple of weeks. I did find that I can crouch down a bit more in the forward-folds to crouch moves in the beginning. I cannot say that either my hamstrings or my lower back have had any significant gains in flexibility, however. So, while I am making progress it is slow.

Workout Update: Insanity Max 30/Chalean Extreme/Body Beast/P90X Hybrid Day Round 2 Day 5

Day 5 was the first Friday Fight Round 1 workout of this round of the Hybrid workout. It went pretty much like the other workouts this week. I did as many of the unmodified moves as I could and then switched over to modified. There were a couple of jumping moves that I still took it easy doing. I kind of did half-tuck jumps for the unmodified moves because, even though my back is feeling better, I did not want to tweak it again and be back at square one.

Workout Update: Insanity Max 30/Chalean Extreme/Body Beast/P90X Hybrid Day Round 2 Day 4

Day 4 was the second time doing the Tabata Power workout this week. I probably modified more than I indented to, especially with the power jumps, which caused me to hurt my back on Tuesday. I did as many unmodified moves as I could, but definitely not as many as I would have liked. But, I made it through without further tweaking my back, so that was a plus.

Workout Update: Insanity Max 30/Chalean Extreme/Body Beast/P90X Hybrid Day Round 2 Day 3

Day 3 of round 2 was the sweat intervals workout. Thankfully, my back felt well enough by the evening that I could stick to the workout, but there were some moves for which I did not even try the unmodified versions, like the  "free runners". I was able to get through but was very gassed at the end.

Workout Update: Insanity Max 30/Chalean Extreme/Body Beast/P90X Hybrid Day Round 2 Day 2

Day 2 of round 2 of the hybrid workout was the Tabata Power workout. I again was trying to do as many unmodified moves as I could. About halfway through, during the power jumps I tweaked my back, so I ended up doing modified moves for most of the exercises from there on out. We will see how my back is feeling tomorrow. I will try to do the next Max 30 workout, but if my back is still hurting, like it is now, I am not going to push it, and will probably just switch to doing the Recharge workout. But, I am going to play it by ear. I was able to make it about 11 minutes into this workout before maxing out. But again, had I been doing unmodified moves the entire time, I would have maxed out during the warmup.

Workout Update: Insanity Max 30/Chalean Extreme/Body Beast/P90X Hybrid Day Round 2 Day 1

Day one of round two was the cardio challenge workout from Max 30. This time I do as many unmodified moves (at least one rep) for each exercise. It was definitely humbling to do the unmodified moves because I would have maxed out during the warm-up. That gives you an idea of how much easier the modified versions of the moves can be.  The workout (and really all the workouts in Max 30) has a ton of jumping-jack-based moves which definitely tire me out very quickly. So, it was humbling starting over. But, I was able to make it 11-minutes into the workout by switching from unmodified to modified until I was totally gassed. I was able to do at least a few unmodified versions of every move before I had to switch to the modified moves. Hopefully, once I get to round three I can do unmodified moves the entire time. We will see how that goes though.

Workout Update: Insanity Max 30/Chalean Extreme/Body Beast/P90X Hybrid Day 56

Day 56 was the last day of the first round of the Hybrid work out which was the Body Beast back and biceps workout again. This workout is pretty tough and has a big cardio effect because you go from exercise to exercise with little rest in between. It is not as cardio-intensive as the Insanity workouts, of course, but for a resistance workout, it does a good job in that context.

Workout Update: Insanity Max 30/Chalean Extreme/Body Beast/P90X Hybrid Day 55

Day 55 was the Recharge stretch/yoga workout from CE. The most notable thing about it was that I was able to crouch all the way down for the first time in a long time, meaning my legs are getting stronger, there is less stress on my knees and my back is getting stronger as well. So, that is definitely a plus, but my overall flexibility has not changed all that much lately.

Workout Update: Insanity Max 30/Chalean Extreme/Body Beast/P90X Hybrid Day 54

Day 54 was the last Friday Fight Round 2 for this round. I was again able to barely make it to the end of the workout without maxing out. Of course, I was modifying and doing some of the moves slower than the modifier in the video was, but I got through it. Monday I will be restarting the Max 30 doing month one partially unmodified and partially modified. Basically, doing as many unmodified reps of each exercise as I can, then switch to the modified version. When I can no longer do the modified version of a move (the first time) will be the max out time.

Workout Update: Insanity Max 30/Chalean Extreme/Body Beast/P90X Hybrid Day 53

Today was the last of the Max Out Strength workouts for this round. I was able to get farther in, a couple minutes past my max-out time last week, but still could not get through the push-up section before I maxed out. Again, I am under no illusions that I will be able to get through it without maxing out when I am not modifying as nobody in the video doing the unmodified version (as much as I can tell anyway) can do that. My main goal is to just keep making progress.

Workout Update: Insanity Max 30/Chalean Extreme/Body Beast/P90X Hybrid Day 52

Day 52 was the last time doing Max Out Sweat for this round. It was very tough to get through but I managed to eek it out all the way to the end. The last two moves are probably the hardest (even doing the modified version) for me in the workout and I was totally gassed at the end of it. But, if all goes well I will have at least three workouts this week that I can get through without unscheduled breaks.

Workout Update: Insanity Max 30/Chalean Extreme/Body Beast/P90X Hybrid Day 51

Day 51 was the Max Out Power workout again. I was hoping to make it all the way through without stopping, but unfortunately, I maxed out at the 20-minute mark. That was about 5 minutes later than last week, however.
